  • Once completing the USTA Officials School for the first time, you should be contacted by your area Mentor.  If you have not been contacted within a week of finishing your school, contact Jane Scott at jane@nctennis.com.

All Official's individual work records are now recorded online at the USTA's new Nucula site.  Be sure to keep your records up to date so that you don't have to do it all at the last minute!

Advancement Opportunities!!!  (how to...)

Provisional Umpire:

  1. Pass the USTA Provisional exam
  2. Pass the USTA Officials exam

Provisional Referee:

  1. Provisional Umpire AND
  2. Pass the USTA Referee exam

Sectional Roving Umpire:

  1. Pass the USTA Officials exam (at the Sectional level) AND
  2. Officiate a total of five of the following:
    • Line Umpire days, Chair Umpire matches, or Roving Umpire days.

Sectional Referee:

  1. Sectional Umpire AND
  2. Pass the USTA Referee exam (at the Sectional level) AND
  3. Serve as Referee or Deputy Referee for an entire tournament

USTA Umpire:

  1. Section Umpire AND
  2. Pass the USTA Officials and Referee exam (at the USTA level) AND
  3. Serve as a Roving Umpire for 15 days AND
  4. Receive satisfactory evaluations (at the USTA level)

USTA Referee:

  1. USTA Umpire AND
  2. Pass the USTA Referee exam (at the USTA level) AND
  3. Serve as a Referee for three entire tournaments

Specialty Positions (such as Chair/Line Umpire, National/Professional levels):

Terminology

Levels of Officiating:
Provisional - an Official with little or no experience
Sectional - an Official with some experience; works mainly in their section
USTA - an Official with plenty of experience; works mainly in their section but is more available to work around the country
National - an Official with a lot of experience that works many tournaments; mainly in charge of National Championship-level events
Professional - a truly experienced Official that works primary in the Professional level (tournaments with at least $10,000+ prize money)

Officials Positions:
Roving Umpire - an Official in charge on multiple courts that roves from one court to another during tournament play
Chair Umpire - an Official in charge of one match from the chair position
Line Umpire - an Official responsible for calling a particular line in a "chaired" match
Referee - an Official responsible for enforcing the rules over an entire tournament
